I often wonder, as we roll down some highway, passing the average "RV Park", why? You've all seen them. Maybe you are staying in one! Nice, new, fully self contained motorhomes, fifth wheels and travel trailers of every make and type, packed awning to slide in a so called RV Park.

I say so called because it sure doesn't look like a "Park" to me! Much more like a parking lot! Why? When you have a rig with all the amenities of home, that you can take darn near anywhere, why drive from your crowded city streets back home, only to park in a crowded "parking lot!"

Why not do as we do? Go RV Boondocking! Get off the beaten path. Travel the "blue" roads. The two lane roads! Go slow and easy and actually see the country. Stay in National Forest Campgrounds or, again as we do, utilize the full capability of your self contained rig and do "dispersed camping" as the National Forest Service and the BLM call it.

Nearly every National Forest in the country as well as millions of acres of BLM lands offer dispersed camping. And the second best part is, dispersed camping is free! The First Best being of course RV Boondocking in far country! Open land, clear air, quiet enough to actually hear the cry of a loon. It gets no better. It really doesn't.

Heidi and I rarely stay in any developed, high dollar, private "RV Parks". Even on the nights we are on the road between RV Boondocking camps, we find a quiet roadside rest area or good old Wal Mart for a few hours rest. I guess you could call that Urban Boondocking!

We have everything we need so we just can't see spending $30 and more to park where the neighbors hot water heater, 20 feet away, kicks in at 2 a.m. with a little impromptu serenade!

I have to tell you, if you have never gone RV Boondocking before, you don't know what you are missing. You haven't experienced all the pleasure your rig has to offer until you step out of your rig at sunrise, parked beside some beautiful mountain lake, not another rig in sight. The quiet and beauty of that place just sinks into your soul and you thank God for the inspiration that took you there!

If your "RV camping" seems to be missing a certain "something" see if RV Boondocking doesn't fill the void. I think you'll be glad you did.

Note from Steven & Fran: We offer web space for guest author articles because we believe there is always room for another viewpoint and because we surely don't know everything there is to know about RVs and the RVing lifestyle. in that spirit we invite you to submit your own articles. We're happy to give you credit and provide a link to your website.
